Hamburg pulled off something special in June. AIDApura, AIDAluna, and AIDAprima sailed the Elbe together in formation, trailing plumes of coloured smoke above the water as thousands lined the banks to watch. The city turned out for 30 years of AIDA, and we got to be part of it.
Our tugs had one job: keep the parade moving safely.
Escorting three large cruise ships through the port of Hamburg simultaneously is not a routine assignment. The Elbe is busy. The formations are tight. And with an audience of thousands on the Landungsbrücken, the margin for anything going wrong is exactly zero. Our crews knew that going in.
What made this one different was scale and spectacle in equal measure. AIDA’s team had planned a moment they called a „Lächelrekord“ – a smile record – with 7,029 guests and crew across 11 ships worldwide smiling simultaneously within 24 hours. On the Elbe, that translated into something more visible: three vessels moving in close formation through one of Germany’s busiest waterways, in full view of the city.
30 years of AIDA is a Hamburg story.
The first AIDA ship set off in 1996. Since then, Hamburg has remained central to the brand, and the Elbe has been the backdrop for many of the milestones along the way. This anniversary parade was a reminder of how intertwined cruise travel, port operations, and city identity have become along this stretch of river. Our tugs have played a part in that history at many points, and this weekend added another chapter.
Escorting a birthday parade is not the most technically complex operation we run. But it is one of the most visible, and visibility in the port of Hamburg comes with its own kind of responsibility. The vesselsmove, the crowds watch, and everything in between has to work exactly as planned.
