A special visit to the Port of Hamburg

On November 18, the British aircraft carrier HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH docked in the Port of Hamburg, providing an extraordinary spectacle for experts, photographers and the numerous onlookers along the Elbe.

As one of the British Navy’s most modern warships, HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH is one of the largest and most technologically advanced aircraft carriers in the world. With a length of around 280 meters and a weight of around 65,000 tons, the aircraft carrier can transport up to 40 aircraft and helicopters. The sophisticated radar and defense systems on board underline the strategic importance of this impressive ship.

HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH’s visit to Hamburg reflected the close international ties between the UK and Germany and highlighted the importance of the Port of Hamburg as a port of call for global naval operations. The call was elaborately prepared and accompanied by a fleet of tugs that maneuvered the ship safely through the narrow waterways of the port.

The tugs  FAIRPLAY-91,  FAIRPLAY-95 and  FAIRPLAY-96 took over the main operation, while the tugs  FAIRPLAY IX,  FAIRPLAY-94 and  FAIRPLAY-38 stood in reserve and were ready for action depending on the work situation. In addition, the tug PETER was deployed with its mast folded down to provide as unobstructed a view as possible for the planned photo and film shoots. The tug “Michel” was deliberately not used in order to create a homogeneous image for the recordings.

The tugs began their work at around 6:45 a.m. to pick up the HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. After the ship had passed the HALO station, the tugs guided it safely to its berth at the Steinwerder container terminal, where it moored at around 9:00 am. Although the sun did not rise until 7:52 a.m. that day, the photographers still managed to capture some impressive images of the majestic ship and the accompanying tugs.

The HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH remained in Hamburg until November 23rd and left the port again at 13:00, leaving numerous impressions and unforgettable images for visitors and maritime experts alike. The visit of this impressive aircraft carrier was a special highlight for Hamburg and a reminder that the port remains highly relevant as an important meeting place for international ships.

Many thanks to our Fleet Captain Konstantin Pohsin who managed the preparation and coordination of this unique project.
